Balance and Contrasts

Fences

I connected these two photos so they lined up and brought out the green in the left hand photo and the pink in the other in order to show a contrast in colors. The two photos are cohesive when put together despite being two different photos.

The Differences in Humans

I took these two photos on the same wall to make it cohesive, but chose these subjects to demonstrate opposites.

Fall

 These two photos show the colors of fall. One is a fill the frame technique of bark, and the other is zoomed out of the same tree. The colors of the bark are transferred over onto the bark.

I took these photos on a bridge after my friend Cora and I had finished shopping and getting coffee. She is always smiling and so I tried to show her in just three photos. 

Jessie the Dog

I took these while getting my Christmas tree. Jessie, a dog at the farm, followed my family begging us to play fetch. From left to right, this triptych is a cycle beginning when Jessie prepared for one of us to throw it, to her bringing it back, then back to her begging again.

Grids and Mood

For this project, I experimented with making different grids and used a variety of different colors.  I edited images and altered the colors and put the photographs together in a pattern in order to create unique grids. Also, I tested out different editing techniques to portray specific moods in certain photographs. I worked with warm colors, cool colors, complementing colors and monochromes.

Demonstration of Mood

For this photo, I increased the background's exposure to accentuate the cat's face. I edited the cat's colors to a darker red and brown to make the photograph more intense and to demonstrate an ominous mood. I think the way the cat is looking down at camera furthers the mood of the photograph.

I took this photograph downtown of these two homeless artists on the street. This picture is powerful in demonstrating the tragic issue of homelessness. I edited the colors to make them dark and almost monochrome and took the saturation down. The idea of homelessness is an upsetting subject to many and I think the concept of the picture along with the gloomy, grey colors creates a dismal mood.

This photograph is dark and has an eerie feel to it. I think that the fog helps portray this mood along with the emptiness of the road. The photographer edited this photo to be monochrome to further the ghostly feel.

Project 2

Photography Techniques

For this project, I took pictures around downtown Portland in order to get examples of the different photography techniques. In total I took about 150 photos. I frequently changed the settings on my camera from close-up to manual. A lot of my photos are in black and white because I love the effect it gives on the photos.

 

 For my first photo I took a picture of a Portland sign. I cropped it to make it so the sign was on a third, then made the photo black and white.

Rule of Thirds

As my second photo I took a picture of a statue outside of a restaurant. It's shadow was on the wall behind it, so I took a picture in between the statue's legs in order to frame the hands of the shadow.

Frame Within A Frame

I took my third photo in a hotel called The Nines in downtown Portland. There was a restaurant in the hotel and I took a picture of the table settings. I thought the reflection of the glass so I cropped it in order to make the subject the glass.

My next photo is also in black and white. I stood on a chair in a library in order to get an above view of the books. 

Bird's Eye View

For my fifth photo, I took a picture of a large building looking up with the sky taking up half of the picture. The building looked like glass and I thought it was cool that the reflection of the clouds was on the surface of the building.

I also took this photo in The Nines hotel. There was a staircase going down and there were blue, glass structures in between the stair cases.

This next photo was taken in Pioneer Square downtown. I took it from an angle in order to show diagonals with the street names of the sign.

My last photo was taken at my kitchen. I went through my cabinets and found the sprinkles. I set my camera on close-up and did my best to get close and focus. I thought the colors really stood out well.
